  • Viva Terlingua...and Alpine!

  • Awesome video and the power and whistles rock! T.C. 5-9-2010

  • Yes in fact where I live(Italy the few diesel railways aren't changed to eletric for high cost because the governament (the railnetwork have the half owner ship) spent a lot of money for high speed line and modernization of old high speed line Florence-Rome.

  • @92ignoto That was part of it. Very little diesel was used in the US until the railroads started using it. It was much cheaper the first 5 or so years. Now electric is probably cheaper, but the high cost of building catenary and other electrical equipment makes it too expensive for all but the most heavily used lines. That's why it works well on the NEC but not many other places.

  • thank you! I thinked what this choose was about low price of oil in USA.

However In Europe the oil its more expensive as eletric!

  • @92ignoto When the it was time to replace steam we chose diesel and most of the rest of the world went electric. Now it is much harder to change from diesel to electric.

  • Why the american trains are all (acela line is exluded) by diesel?

  • I've ridden the 'Sunset Limited' both on the SP pre-Amtrak and Amtrak. On one of my trips on the SP back in the 1960s, it had 20+ cars and 5 diesel engines -- very impressive and great fun.
