richard diamond the sport ending with Barbara Bain

This is the ending to The Sport, the first of five episodes in which Barbara Bain appears as Karen Wells. She then disappeared with no explanation. Diamond's answering service operator was played by Mary Tyler Moore. However, she was billed only as "Sam". She revealed her identity in a Leggs commercial and was subsequently fired. This episode aired in 1959.

Moore talked about this on the old "Later" with Bob Costas show. I guess it's no surprise that the producers would have their own version of why she was fired. Sure seems funny now though. Canning an actress who went on to become one of the first ladies of television...for wanting another 50 bucks a week. *chuckle*

Thanks for the info. Women were clearly not being paid their fair share in Hollywood in those days. Barbara Bain made less than half of what the male actors did on Mission: Impossible and she was the only one of them to win emmys!

Mary Tyler Moore said that when interest in her only partially seen character started to grow, she asked for a raise- and was promptly fired from the show. Moore added that at the time she would have been happy with 50 dollars more a week.

I remember reading somewhere that she was fired after she revealed that she was the secretary on a Leggs commercial. I don't know if that's true. Also read that she was not being paid much at all.
