Come on, we've all wondered this. There's been dozens of videos and discussions on the internet about it, but what actually happens?

I'm shooting with a high speed camera made by Vision Research.

Talk is cheap, and several before/after experiments have been performed, but they all have one flaw. It's extremely difficult to visualize what is going on with the flow-fields of the weapon blasts.

We planned and assembled several different assets including a high speed camera over a few months and then ran a test designed specifically to allow the viewer to observe the gas dynamics in great detail!

Needless to say, this was a blast. Well, two blasts if you want to be technical about it (and we usually do).

I performed an experiment to see what the differences were between semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. The advantage of shooting under water is that you can see the boundary of the gas flow fields almost perfectly.

MUSIC INFO:

"Rep By Pop" Written and recorded by James Cleary and A Shell in the Pit with bass by Neil Towers. I've partnered with A Shell in the Pit for several months now.

  • Was it necessary to sacrifice the bagel? Get with your attorney, as I am filing suit on behalf of all boiled-then-baked tori to prevent further harm to these beloved bread products.

(Seriously though, that was a wonderful experiment/re-cap.)

  • Excellent welds at 1:00. Nice.

  • @illahham - Nevertheless, guns are the great equalizer. In your example, hundreds of men under king's command could be stopped by several dozen well-shooting regular ol' citizens. My own experience, as I noted above, has proven that to me. So you're unconvinced, so what?

  • i think they should have used some ballistics gel to mesure the force to see how much each round loses while being fired in water

  • @HomelessOnline I read it and it's not convincing. For example he talks about primae noctis. Besides the fact you can trace it as far back in mankind to ancient libya, I'm not convinced guns could have prevented it. If a lord wished to have someone's wife would her husband owning a gun or her have stopped that? When the lord has hundreds of men under his command? Wouldn't they also have guns?

  • @illahham - search for "imagine a world without guns" by Dave Kopel, then read it and then reconsider your question.

  • @HomelessOnline Has society really become less violent because the weak could defend themselves better with guns? So none of this can be attributed to acquired knowledge or shifting morality?

  • @illahham - I take it you haven't read the essay. Much less violence and intimidation going on now. "Imagine A World Without Guns." Will take you 20 minutes to read.

  • @HomelessOnline Depends on how handicapped they are I guess. People have been exploiting each other before guns existed, after guns existed, and will continue to.

  • @illahham - I don't care about katanas, as I don't think one would have helped me. What good would a katana do a handicapped person in a wheelchair? I wouldn't trust my life to a flashbang or a katana. I believe behaviors should be criminalized, not inanimate objects. I realize guns aren't for everybody, but they are for me. You should read web essay "Imagine A World Without Guns." It explains how the strong exploited the weak before guns ever existed. Which group would you be in?
