This animation shows a dipole and its electric field. A Gaussian surface enters the scene, envelopes the negative charge on the left, extends to envelope the positive charge on the right, shrinks and departs. Gauss's Law says that the flux through the surface is proportional to the net enclosed charge, despite its irregular shape. This animation was made using free software, notably POV-Ray and ffmpeg.
