A 1946 test of a 23-kiloton nuke, named "Baker", 27 meters underwater. This was part of Operation Crossroads. The tidal wave from the blast rose over 2 miles high.

  • I enjoy watching videos of nuclear tests, and this one is the most visually stunning one there is in my opinion. However, when I learnt that live animals were placed on the ships to expose them to the blast makes me feel a little guilty about enjoying the spectacle. And what about the sea animals such as fish in the area? I suppose any nuclear blast is going to kill wildlife, even with the best of intentions. I think it is good that nuclear tests are mostly a thing of the past.

  • u see the ships around there? they put sheeps there to look what whill happen :s, and the ppl on the aircraft carrier ( the guys who filmed ) almost all died a month later

see all

  • The tidal wave could not have risen to 2 miles high, that would have engulfed the whole island. Don't you mean the mushroom cloud?

By the way, the dome effect that appears briefly after the blast is caused by water vapour in the air condensing into water droplets (mist) because of the sudden drop in air pressure in the wake of the shock wave.

  • I'm sorry I'll never eat bean again..

  • @tranquility65: Oh, I'm sure a goodly amount of the fish in the 10mi x 10mi lagoon died that day, and 38% of the tethered animals died of blast or radiation. Today the lagoon is teeming with fish; it's a divers paradise, though they're not allowed to eat them.

    Amen on your final, there.

  • @blowaap2: No. There were no people on any of the ships of the target fleet. Of the tethered animals, 38% died of blast or radiation.

  • @TheTerrapin55: At the time the film was made, the nuke age was only a year old. This is before fusion bombs.

  • @drewsky684: Yeah. It was inside the Bikini Atoll lagoon, about halfway to the bottom.

  • WHAT THE FU- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MUHAHAHAHAHHAHAAH! MUAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!

  • 27 meters is actually pretty shallow

  • Offffffffffffffffffff a.q
