This is why I'm glad not all Pennsy steamers like 1361, 4483, and even 643 went to this shithole. Not suffering the same fate. To not operate them is one thing. Half understandable, half BS. But to leave them out to decay?? No plz. Give it a damn roof.
@tachikoma747 Thats stupid! You can't get a sense of a steam locomotive inless its running. Sure you can see all the valve gear and the cab and pumps, but to hear that whistle and the chuffing is an entirely different sense. The Railroad Museum is making a big mistake on this one. What about 7004 what is her fate?
@Bassfanatic94 apparently the 1223 will NEVER run again. According to one of the volunteers at the museum I spoke to this past weekend, the 1223 would require a total boiler overhaul which would essentially include replacing the entire boiler. Strasburg offered to do the job but the museum did not want to destroy the "authenticity" of the locomotive by giving it an entirely new boiler. They opted to keep it intact and keep it static forever :/
@tachikoma747 Yep, its always about the contracts. I wish Strasburg Railroad and the R.R. Museum of PA was more connected. People think they are one whole organization when they are actually the exact opposite. I would love to see 1223 run or maybe have the K4 run, but that will never happen in less one of Strasburg's engines has a major failure. Plus they will have to make a contract with them to restore it and use it which will be hard to do. A K4 is really hard to run at 30 mph on the rails.
@Bassfanatic94 the museum won't release the death grip they have on their engines. I mean hey you have one of the best steam locomotive facilities in the country across the street (you can hear 90 dinging in the background) but I guess the old days of 1223 and 7002 are over.
@ProfessorIgor Yes that is very true. It would be over 1 million to get her fixed. They have a lot of her parts welded together and stowed away in their restoration shop. If you are really serious about getting her steaming I would recommend going around to major industry leaders and asking for sponsorships. Ross Rowland did it for his American Freedom train and it took him 55 times to get just 1 sponsor, but after that 1 sponsor signed the rest all flocked to him.
If I ever win the lottery you can count on me i will fucking fix every one of these fuckers and run em' on horseshoe if i win the lottery lol

@Bassfanatic94 oh, I have... and he would love to, but it would take a staggering amount of money to get her boiling again.
