Warren Zevon Live at WMMS Studio, Cleveland OH on October 13, 1976.

Desperados Under The Heaves: One of the most beautiful songs written by Warren!
Published by Warner-Tamerlane/Darkroom Music BMI, 1976

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill

Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves

Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmmmmm..
........................... Look away..........................................
(Look away down Gower Avenue, Look away....)

  • Happy Birthday Warren. Rest in Peace.

  • @CayceBalara It's great having thought about!

  • This is the best version I have heard so far.Warren was at it best alone, much like Springsteen in Nebraska or The Ghost of Tom Joad, his voice magnified in it's intensity by the starkness of the background music.

  • @Skwerrlly Thank you for the comment! I completely agree with you!

  • Stunning version of this song. I love how he's playing WITH his piano as much if not more than he's playing the song. All the subtle flurries and interpretations are haunting and telling. It's almost as if you can hear a primal subconscious within a stream of conscious working somewhere deep inside him. His genius is obvious throughout. Brilliant. Thanks for posting.

  • @ConnotationPress Well said. Great song, great performance

  • Thanks

  • One of the few great musicians of the late 20thC......such beautiful music, fragile voice and soul....hmmm hmmmm hmmm

    Crucified thieves indeed

  • I'm happy to hear Zevon like this song as well. It's never good when the artists themselves loathe some of the songs you adore (a-hem, Radiohead).

  • @lovingjah1056 well said

  • he was a stellar musician's musician. I am so thankful I got to hear this.
