The USDA is waging war against against Canada Geese - slaughtering thousands of these peaceful birds in recent mass round-ups all over the country.
Help us build an army of compassionate, informed Americans to stop the USDA from killing geese. Please visit www.InDefenseOfAnimals.org to find out how you can help.

war on geese? WTF.. wth did the geese do?? look what happened to the passenger pigeon?! they were really COMMON and a "nuissance" now they are extinct cause their population crashed. share the land i agree, they were here long before us they tell us when fall is coming in canada.

@onyxescence That was more a future expectation. Nothing good has ever happened with overpopulation of one species, even humans. Also, it's not like many people are eating them here. But there's still a chance they can carry it if it were to become more easy to jump species. Another thing, domesticating wild animals to accept people is a bad idea. They walk up to you to get food this time, next time it's a guy with a shotgun they gleefully wander up and beg to. Stop treating them like people!!

@satsunada, please show me one documented case of anyone catching avian flu from a Canada goose. One documented case. Or one documented case where anyone has caught anything from a Canada goose. Not insinuation but documented. Can't do it. And geese here nest in public places where people including children go near enough to touch and feed them sitting on the nest. I know geee Sansunada.

@onyxescence Learning implies time. The damage was done in the past and there's no way to stop the expansion of humans aside from slaughtering humans. Is that what you want? Relocation will fail instantly. They have wings, they will return to nests. The other two methods are just as cruel and MORE dangerous. Why tamper with genetic patterns to correct tampering with biological patterns? Killing is just cleaner in the humane sense and a better idea than MORE tampering.

@satsunada, the only thing that needs correcting is for humans to learn to coexist peacefully with our wildlife and not to be the bullies and thugs of the planet. There are non lethal ways to manage the goose population, including egg addling, relocation, and OvoControlG,n and in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada where I live WE are doing that. This widespread extermination of Canada geese is not occurring in Canada. It seems to be a USDA make work project.

@onyxescence I won't argue that humans are destructive. That's a given. However, there are severe geese population issues that arise out of poor wetland management and chemical controls that were late to enact. This left the population easily susceptible to contaminants and made their natural predators have to seek food. Humans subsequently killed them so now the geese are unchecked in nature and filled with chemicals. The food chain is broken. Whether we did it or not, it needs correcting.

@satsunada, actually experts in the CDC as well as wildlife experts have said there is no evidence there ever has been or will be a public health threat from Canada geese. So much for your avian flu accusation. Canada geese do not 'murder other species' and are birds that like to live and let live. Humans are so obviously THE most destructive, polluting, invasive, and out of control species on the planet it is pathetic to see someone like you pointing a finger at a Canada goose.

Here's a thought. If you really gave a damn about the geese and believed they were so peaceful, hold this rally near a nesting area and see who comes away with scars, bruises and some variation of avian flu. On top of that, you can't eat them.. they are filled with nasty chemicals.
Also, there's a severe overpopulation problem that's murdering other species, ruining environments, and spreading diseases/chemicals.
It's not that it's extermination, it's population control for us and them.
