William Byrd (1540 - 1623) was the greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries. Byrd was well known as a keyboard-player. He wrote a wealth of music for the virginals, Fantasias, Pavans and Galliards, the fashionable paired dances of the time, and song variations.

  • The tourist in the Tower might get separated from his tour,

And hear childish whispering ghosts, like this music.

Playing tricks, stealing from the rich to give to the poor,

Edward, and his kid brother slain

Play tunes upon the wind to cleanse the stain,

For somehow in the order of Heaven

The victim must atone for the blackest villain

Until all our sins they be forgiven.

So they as blessed ghosts do laugh,

And play Byrd on an electronic piano.

  • I don't believe the purist nonsense of not playing early music on a modern piano. The combination Gould's genius and the dynamics of a modern concert piano bring out far more expressiveness than the piece would have if played on a harpsichord (oh no sorry.., too late) or a pair of viginals. I am sure Byrd if he were around today would approve of this performance. Nobody with an ounce in their soul could fail to be moved by this.

  • Haunting.
