Some WMA schools including Schola Saint George have started to give out colored belts to mark progress in the Schola.

Here is a suggestion on how to tie the belt to make a medieval looking knot that will hold for combat with an ordinary Martial arts belt (ie. no need for a specially made belt).

  • No disrespect intended, but I kind of don't like it.

Mostly its the thought of mimicking the belting system brought in by the Japanese military during the Great Pacific War when they corrupted Okinawan karate. Its become pervasive because it does have some natural strengths. But if you're going to study a Western Martial Art, why not go for something... Western - like a leather belt?

  • I rather like it. No buckles to catch during practice and no dangly things that are obviously not used during our period of emphasis. :)

  • Hmm. A much more solid way of tying the belt than what I usually use. Looks less prone to slipping and reminds me of scottish clan crests (not coats of arms), which are ringed in leather belts with similar knots. Had you noticed your double loops form the shape of a cross? Two horizontal and two vertical loops.

  • this is cool. good idea
