Mark Driscoll -- preached this sermon a couple of weeks after the trial of two pastors and the passage of new by-laws that were passed in a coercive manner without adequate discussion and no member involvement.
A member who was also an attorney asked questions and pointed out that the carefully crafted (the elders wording) document intended to answer questions were full of redactions and failed to answer many questions.
For this she was told to listen to this sermon and her membership privileges were cut off.
This is a misuse of the pulpit. The elders at Mars Hill continue to tolerate this kind of preaching. They continue to fail to hold the executive elders accountable for the angry firing by Mark Driscoll of the two pastors who were questioning the significant changes in the by-laws.
The new by-laws gave the five highly paid executive elders life long tenures. The language of the new by-laws makes it virtually impossible to remove them. The elders, who under the old by-laws had equal authority together and delegated authority as warranted to the executive elders, no longer have any authority at all under the new by-laws.
They therefore have no authority under the new by-laws to hold Mark Driscoll accountable for comments like he made in this sermon. They cannot hold him accountable for the rash firings and absurd "trial" of two beloved pastors for "sins" that are silly and trite.
The two elders need to be exonerated and the new by-laws thrown out until they are fully discussed and debated amongst all the elders and voted on appropriately.
