  • do they sell these in south california?

  • I doubt it. This isn't a common species in the pet trade

  • we call those guys black snakes, or black ret snakes.....are they really considered king snakes? if you google images for 'common black snake maryland' you'll see the same snake i am pretty sure.

  • That is an awesome snake. All we have are garden snakes and racers here in south BC its lame!

  • My black rat snake doesnt look anything like that snake. If your around them a lot you can see the differences easier

  • @Snakesrock15 ;) no worries. i can understand for more than one reason how the 2 could be confused. they look kinda similar, at least from the dorsal view sometimes. and the scientific names are pretty close, too - 'nigra' and 'nigrita'.

  • @capricorn4003 Ok, your right. I had never heard of that subspecies before. Just the Mexican Blacks.

  • @Snakesrock15 it actually IS a Black Kingsnake. Black Kings are a subspecies of the Eastern King. Black Kings are almost solid black on top, with faint speckling on the sides, whereas Eastern Kings have a distinctive 'chain' pattern running the length of the body. Black Rats and Black Kings could be confused because Black Rats do have some white appearing between their scales, but Kings are a more 'cylindrical' bodied snake while Rats are like a loaf of bread in cross-section.

  • That's really a black rat snake. Eastern kings have solid white bands going around them instead of those little white specks. Rat snakes also have a checkered belly like that one had.

  • @reptilewranglers my mistake, apologies.

  • @XXADXX97 mexican blacks are completely different from the eastern black kingsnake shown here

  • how big do they get
