THE START OF SLAVERY..... Only a few decades after the discovery of America by Europeans, demand for cheap labor to work plantations made slave-trading a profitable business. The peak time of slave ships to the Atlantic passage was between the 17th and 18th century when large plantations developed in the English colonies of North America.

In order to achieve profit, the owners of the ships divided their hulls into holds with little headroom, so they could transport as many slaves as possible. Unhygienic conditions, dehydration, dysentery and scurvy led to a high mortality rate, up to a third of captives. Only the most resilient survived the transport. Often the ships transported hundreds of slaves, who were chained tightly to plank beds. For example, the slave ship "Henrietta Marie" carried about 200 slaves on the long Middle Passage. They were confined to cargo holds with each slave chained with little room to move.

Islam started African slavery, and they still practice it today. It was Arab Muslims and Africans converted to Islam that introduced the Europeans to African slavery. The original religion of Africans is not Islam, and the Qur'an allows for the enslavement and conversion of non-Muslims. The European was a late-comer when it came to the enslavement of Africans compared to the Arab Muslim. Arabs, even today, see dark Africans as slaves or for slavery.

You cant deny that islam was invovled in slavery period so was christianity, and jews. @ausaralmasri You might want to look up the history of SPAIN (Andalusia) which was a Muslim country for 500 years and where Africans were an integral part of the economic, political and social system as FREE PEOPLE before you start threatening to slap a woman. btw not a good look. @Born2Flesh The distinction MUST be made that the Muslim religion (Muhammad himself) says that a slave is HUMAN and should be treated as such. If a man were to take a slave woman to bed she and the resulting children MUST be provided for as if she were a wife. And it was not illegal for a slave to seek distinction within the wider society. In other words the African slave was not anathema in Islamic tradition until Christian enslavement came along. This is FACT
