Trivia: "In Brian Sweet's 1994 Steely Dan Biography Reelin' in the Years, Donald Fagen states that the lyrics are actually about time travel. Sweet also hypothesizes that the first verse was inspired by the band's distaste for touring, particularly the tours of the American South that their record label had sent them upon the previous year."

Recorded at Steely Dan's performance at the Canandaigua Musical Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY on July 23, 2011.

I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?

Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

  • The real - Carolyn?? ( Or just make-believe)

Do you think that they really come from another world?

    Me too!!

    So freakly......

  • Fantastic work - thanks for posting this. I saw them in Melbourne in October - Steve Winwood was support for the tour and he joined them for lead vocals on this as the finale. Incredible stuff. Seeing this has brought it all back so clearly.

  • one person's an idiot.. who could dislike this?

  • Carolyn as always is on fire!!!!!!! love it!

  • Weird, dude, weird. Why are you typing the lyrics ? Why do you repeat the senile ramblings of a no talent hack as he states that the band didn't enjoy their time here in Dixie. Dear friends, and you too, Brian Sweet, Steely Dan loves Dixie. And Dixie loves the Dan.

  • Still one of the best bands in the world!!

  • yep, she's smokin hot alright, and what an epic performance by her to one of the greatest hits of all time.

  • This song brought the house down when I first saw Steely Dan live in April 1974 at the University of Toledo. During the long instrumental outro Fagen left his keyboards and conducted the band with upraised arms like a true rock 'n' roll maestro. Skunk and Denny on lead guitars, Jim Hodder and Jeff Porcaro on separate drum kits, Michael McDonald on keyboards and backing vocals. Best touring band in the world that year.

  • Saw them in Berlin in the late '90s. Great show.
