Effects of Microgravity on Insulin Production - GSMST SpaceLab Entry

This is our entry for the Youtube SpaceLab (Powered by Lenovo) Contest. For our submission, we decided to look at how microgravity affects the insulin production of bacteria and yeast who have been genetically modified through the use of recombinant DNA technology. This experiment has huge implications in that it may allow for diabetics to one day travel in space and it may also significantly reduce the cost of artificial insulin. Enjoy!

Hey guys - just my two cents - have you thought about maybe extending the scope of the experiment to check the production of insulin by the human pancreatic cells themselves? You could have cultures obtained from a single person sent to the ISS, and another maintained in the lab - checking the production of the hormone. It would help the astronauts and their nutritionists massively by customizing diets to any changes in natural insulin levels brought about by microgravity habitation.
