Once Upon A Time The Super Heroes

This is a documentary made in 2002 about the creation and evolution of comic book superheroes (with a greater leaning towards Marvel comics.)

It show us superheroes such as Batman, Superman, The Flash, The X-Men, Captain America, Silver Surfer, The Fantastic Four, Hulk, Daredevil; with more of a focus on Spider-Man because of the movie released at the time.

The documentary features the creators, writers & artists behind the superheroes such as Dave Gibbons, Alex Ross, Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Travis Charest, John Romita, Joe Kubert, Jim Lee, Carmine Infantino, Joe Simon, Mark Evanier, Paul Dini, Neal Adams, Joe Quesada, John Buscema, Bill Sienkiewicz and radio interview with Jerry Siegel.

  • Fuck Bob Kane. It was Bill Finger who created Batman, all Bob did was trace over other's peoples work. Bob took advantage of Bill's timidness and took all of the credit for Batman.

  • He's a super hero because he chooses to do whats right, he see's how fucked up our world really is and unlike any of these other heroes he decides to not just sit back and wait for panic and destruction, he fights back. What makes him a hero is the fact that he also realizes that he's only human not superhuman and still fights an impossible war against evil.

  • Is it just me or are the early batman comics just as bright and colorful as early superman

  • That's John Romita @00:32, right? If he still has that copy of Action Comics #1 in that wax paper bag, and if it has never been out and fundled, he has the finest copy of that comic in the world. God damn, what a backup if he looses his pension!

  • @cha5 : Yeah, I kind'a got the feeling that Simon was holding back throughout the whole book... it was ok, but he was obviously being diplomatic... That Robinson book looks fantastic, btw...

  • @DeepSouthWrestling1 Yeah I believe I remember a mention of Kane's agreement with DC in the Gerald Jones book 'Men of Tomorrow'

I'm going to pick up Jerry Robinson's auto-biography sometime soon just to get his perspective on it.

Joe Simon in his auto-biography has several interesting anecdotes about Kane in his auto-biography 'My Life In Comics'

"Kane would swagger into the DC offices. 'Either you've got it or you don't got it' he'd say.

    'I got it' he'd conclude."

  • @cha5 : I didn't read it, either... I knew it was nothing but a puff piece that was trumpeting how "great" and "trendsetting" Kane was so I knew better. I'll go you one more, however... I think Finger and Robinson have more to do with Batman than Kane. I don't think Finger will ever get credit, however... I think Kane signed some sort of agreement with DC, legally binding them to an agreement with Kane to list him as the sole creator in perpetuity... not a great artist, but pretty smart...

  • @DeepSouthWrestling1 Well better late than never I guess, did he also give Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson credit for creating The Joker & Robin? I haven't read Kane's auto-bio yet, if he actually made that admission I'd be impressed if he came clean on that point. I just wish DC would list in their Batman comics credits something like 'Batman, created by Bill Finger & Bob Kane' with everything we know about Batman's creation these days; it only seems fair IMHO.

  • @cha5 : Kane actually gave Finger credit around '89 in his auto-bio... of course Finger was dead and buried by that point...
