Zombie movies... are they full of it, or will your average handheld weapon really crack open a human skull?

there was an incident where a man was stabbed in the top of the skull with a knife that large. he survived, and the blade was halfway into his skull. if the knife is sturdy enough it would go through a human skull with some effort.
