I think it's a shape shifting organism and it's smoke form is a very clever way of scaring the hell out of the losties. Rather than it be Jacob himself, I think it's more likely to be controlled by Jacob.

I believe that Christian Shepard was actually restored to life by Jacob, that's why his coffin was empty when Jack found it near the caves. But anyway I think they will leave it till the last season to explain exactly what the monster is, can't wait!

the smoke monster(island)is a shape shifting person controlled by the island and only confronts the 1es who have been on the island before the monster captures the people like/eco/jacob/ben and reminds them of what they have done

As of the season 6 premiere of LOST, the monster is confirmed to be Jacob's nemesis. It claims to not be a monster, and insists its a "who" not a "what". So apparently it is some sort of shapeshifting person. Probably the same race as Jacob.
