Our project, HungryHouse, is a distributed file sharing system that creates redundant copies of files across multiple locations. We recognize that, rather than simply mirroring all the files you want to keep safe in a 1:1 fashion (and requiring a lot of space), distributing different chunks of your file to different computers will increase redundancy of your file while keeping a low disk cost on your local machine making it impossible to lose your file again, for free!
Our idea was intended for home situations where users can leverage unused hard drive space of other family members computers to keep a backup copy of their files. They could also use our program to share photos/music/movies/documents with the rest of the family.
We propose that this idea could be commercialized onto a greater scale, such as large enterprises. Suppose a team of 150 people want to share a 2GB file. By traditional methods of putting the file on a network share, the file would take a very long time to download if everybody tries to access the file at the same time.
HungryHouse successfully counters this issue with a better file distribution and retrieval algorithm to perform this task as different chunks of the files are distributed to different users on the network. Instead of hammering one single network share for when the file is requested, one will be downloading different chunks from different users in a peer-to-peer fashion. This re-organizes network traffic to be coming from different computers leveraging the throughput of a high-speed network better than the traditional point-to-point fashion. This use case is a simple example of how the application can effectively utilize all the network bandwidth available.
Our algorithm is not limited by the complexity or speed of the network; our application will effectively and effectively move files across users on the network regardless of the application running on a wired Gigabit Ethernet network or a Bluetooth wireless network. HungryHouse becomes a technological innovation as there have not been any application that leverages unused hardware as a robust and scalable backup solution.
Although our solution does not incorporate any security features in its current implementation, we have recognized that users can be limited by network administrators by implementing stricter firewall rules. Despite this fact, we put forward that our application be considered and hopefully it can be recognize and become an award-winning innovation.
