does the nest have to be removed or is it sufficient to kill the living yellow jackets with the spray / powder and leave the nest in there?

You don't have to remove the nest. It will do no harm, although you may have a little odor problem from decaying bees, larva, and pupae. Usually that doesn't happen.
I remove them from a ceiling, because you might as well,since they have damaged the ceiling and that needs to be fixed anyway.
