5/23/2011 Update:
After some discussions with BBQ Guru Tech Support and friends on http://www.bbq-brethren.com I solved the problem of fitting the adapter to the WSM 18.5 model... the screw on the air diffuser plate just needs to be loosened a little where there is a little play in it. Once this is done, you can get the adapter and diffuser mounted flush on both sides. The adapter will still overhang the air vent plate just a little, but its rather minor. You can use some of the tape to seal it off if you like...
