CNFJ Rear Adm. Richard Wren's Earthquake Announcement Video Message 03/15/2011

Good Afternoon,

I am Rear Admiral Wren, the Commander, US Naval Forces Japan. Yesterday, I had a town hall meeting here in Yokosuka and updated many of you on issues regarding our support to the people and Government of Japan and impacts from the major earthquake and tsunamis.

At that time, we did not think the issue at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant was going to affect us. This morning I provided you recommended precautionary actions to limit your outside activities due to the detection of very low levels of radioactivity from our sensitive instrumentation located in Yokosuka and Atsugi.

Until the wind shifts in the surrounding area, the recommendations that I put out at 1025 this morning remain in effect. I advise you to continue to limit outdoor activity and shut off ventilation to the outside as much as practical. Radioactivity levels at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Naval Air Facility Atsugi, and surrounding housing areas are expected to remain low. I am continuing to monitor this situation and would like everyone to abide by my previous recommendations.

For some perspective, the additional radiation exposure for the past 12 hours is about 20 millirem, which is less than one month's exposure to naturally occurring background radiation from earth and cosmic sources. There is no appreciable health risk, and we are being very conservative in our recommendations. All services and operations at CFAY and NAF Atsugi will be open as normal to include schools. Again, the only actions that I recommend are that you limit your time outside, minimize transit time, and where possible shut off ventilation to the outside as much as practical.

well at least now they are telling us a little more about whats going on... I appreciate that alot more that the tight lip.. before this I was getting all my info from CNN in the states! I dont think they are going to spend all that money evacuating us though without having something really extreme.... that whole process is super expensive!
