Considering that the USA's 'superpower' status under Obama is now completely polarized against anything Christian, I doubt that an American Pope would mean too much power concentrated on the 'same side'.

I think there is a possibility there may be one. Perhaps not this time, but in the future. With the decline in open expressions of faith and a rise of secularity in the States, there may be a push to have a "Western" pontiff as an example of what one may become, the "American dream", so to say, and that faith and dedication to religion is something to be admired, not abhorred.

I think it would strongly depend on which candidate was considered, Rigali, Dolan, O'Malley, or Burke, perhaps.

Not enough Americans are Catholics. Most Catholics are either in South America or Africa these days. So no, we will never see an American Pope.
