I agree that there are several reasons to SI.
I only spoke about what I knew.
And yeah, I have heard of some really ugly horror stories about parents reactions to their kids SI

I was very suicidal before I started cutting. And when I started cutting, I stopped being suicidal.
Besides, I'd want something more lethal than cutting to kill myself. It's not easy to cut that deep. It isn't even logical to assume that cutting always equals a suicide attempt.

@MissFredFlinstone Well then you should be very thankful you've been strong. But not all people are able to be like you.

I would freak out because I know how dangerous and addicting self-harm is.

Everybody goes through shit, so you can't say that some people have no reason to cut. At some point in their life, people go through a terrible ordeal. But everybody deals with it in their own way, whether it's drawing, singing, playing music.. or drugs, cutting/burning or alcohol. Even if their problems are small compared to others, it's still a problem. They just deal with it how they feel they should. Cutting is a way to cope for people.. You can't control that

@mcr4ever513 you should speak to an adult or someone that you know will listen that has your parents respect, like a family friend or grand parent. Sounds like your parents might have the mind set "he/she is just a kid, what would they know" Put the effort in to make them see and it will eventually be seen. It sound hard, but it will pay off

@idranktheseawater I Just find it extremely hard. after doing it myself, to believe depression causes it. My depression has made me ponder if ending it would be easier, but never in 8 years have I thought "making myself bleed will take the pain away". Also, for anyone that wants the scars to been seen because you're to scared to tell someone about it, that is not right. You can phone the kids or suicide help line instead, or see a psychiatrist.

@idranktheseawater I don't know... I am not saying these people do not have problems because let's face it... if you are cutting yourself you clearly have some kind of problem mentally, but it might not be depression (remember: I have done this myself briefly, so I am not speaking out of ignorance). I have been depressed- self aware- for almost 12 years. I was depressed for 4 years before I cut myself, and 8 years almost since I stopped cutting myself.

I would know because I was a cutter for a little while then realize "cutting solves nothing and I am doing it because everyone else does" so I stopped. It is a thing of high school kids meaning it is a style or trend. If it is someone that is out of high school...that is different because they 200 cutters in my highschool seemed to drop to about 3 after high school.
I am sorry but I totally disagree with self injury. It is not a cry for anything, but a trend. It was never heard of pretty then, all of a sudden, everyone started doing it at high school. Also, it was every goth/emo in my high school (almost 10 years ago) doing it to. They all cut because it was part of their "style" every person I knew that cut themselves had nothing wrong with their lives. They just made big deals of the smallest things so they had a reason to be depressed.

@cerebral23
In some cases its a trend, but not all. Many have reasons outside of being cool.

In all consideration, sometimes it is the parents fault. Some people learn from the youngest ages of there live to hate anything or anyone close. This hate can boil over through time causing a person to take it out in different ways. Parents dont always love like they should.

@idranktheseawater im kinda responding to your last response to jessbeth01. um what if you try to tell your parents these things completely calm and not acting angry or anything and they deny that they do whatever it is they do and just ground you or something like that. what then?

@mcr4ever513
Im not sure what to say
do you have a school counselor?
Maybe they could be an intermediary between you and your parents. Be a source of counsel.
Thats a tough one...
