PAINTED-NIPPLE ALERT for part 2. During a magical night following a day when I didn't think the Festival Gods could shine anymore gifts my way after the sun came out and offered copious amounts of perfect summer bliss, removing the prior, taken-for-granted expectation that Bonnaroo 2010 would be a rainy mudfest (mudfests being underrated), this show by Neon Indian contributed to the vibe brilliantly by way of a most complementary night-groove, punctuated by nipple-feathered, Wellington-rocking, headpiece-balancing 'Roo-nymphs....
Their headdress got me to thinking about when Outkast did a number on television in faux-Native-American regalia and there was offence taken by some; and I wondered if anyone would be offended by this garb, and I hoped not, or that there could be, like, a de-commissioned — as it were — version of the headpiece, because these are cool. And I know it's lamely PC but I don't say "Indian", I say "Native American"...does that make me a twit? It's complicated
As always, this was shot in a single winding take...
Anyway, 'not sure how many times (if at all) it's already been said, but it does seems cozy to say something silly like Neon indian are the mew MGMT, tho' this is said in reality, far more from a buzz/process-aware perspective, than an aesthetic perspective -- and an interesting comparison between the bands trajectories to and through Bonnaroo can be found, in that MGMT took longer; they played their — and the — very first-ever Bonnaroo (when they sounded very differently) then played Bonnaroo 2009 and 2010 (in That Tent), all the while graduating upward in stages and time slots, while Neon Indian debuted in That Tent (albeit, on a Thursday), in a pretty fast year for them, which even the singer acknowledged onstage as hard to believe.
My DJ sensibilities had me thinking of mixing in Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" during one tune, and another tune reminded me of kind of a variation on Brotherhood-era New Order, specifically the Velvet Underground-ish guitar chug, and the shiny, circular arcade game-ish keyb melodies which made for a spacey feel, through which wound a not-quite-loud enough, at-times slightly less-fuzzy Isley Brothers-type charmed guitar, delivering tapered snarls.
It'll be interesting to see if Neon Indian play Bonnaroo 2011...If they do, I'll be there. Funny, with this band being based in NYC, I took catching their live show for granted even tho I'd heard the record early, and didn't catch them onstage 'til SXSW 2010, where, alas, I wasn't shooting the night I saw them...so it was really nice to arrive just in time for this show...
