Pawina wins gold with world best ปวีณา, สุดยอด!

Doha - Thailand's Pawina Thongsuk set a world record in the clean and jerk of the women's 63kg category to derail the Chinese weightlifting juggernaut at the Asian Games yesterday.

The 27-year-old Athens Olympics gold medallist in the 75kg category lifted 142kg in the clean and jerk to upstage China's world champion Ouyang Xiaofang.

It was the sole world record missing from her collection _ she set the snatch and aggregate world records last year.

''I've been to the Asian Games three times and this is my first medal so I'm very happy,'' said Pawina.

''I was hoping for a world record in the clean and jerk but not in the snatch,'' she added. The Thai lifter was also in bullish mood when asked about her chances had Ouyang, who was carried from the stage after failing with her final attempt, been able to complete her third lift.

''I am confident I would have won anyway,'' she said.

In a field of seven, the event became a duel between Pawina and Ouyang _ the world's two best women lifters for their weight _ with the Thai competitor making the most of an injury to her Chinese rival in her second attempt at the clean and jerk.

Pawina came in at 105kg in the first discipline, the snatch, and had to settle for a final score of 110kg after missing out on 115kg, which Ouyang hoisted for a clear advantage going into the clean and jerk. Then followed a series of frenzied changes to the declared entry weights for the two lifters, the rest of the field already having bombed out.

Ouyang eventually came in at 132kg and looked very comfortable in achieving that, but upped the ante to 137kg.

That move backfired when she buckled under the bar, twisted her knee and was dramatically carried off the stage by her coach with the venue doctor in attendance.

Pawina nailed her bid at 137kg for an aggregate of 247kg _ and first place due to her lower bodyweight _ to drive a noisy contingent of Thai supporters into raptures.

Ouyang failed to appear for her third clean and jerk, and Pawina was left revelling in the carnival atmosphere at the Al-Dana venue as she completed her world-record lift. - AFP
