This is some scary shit.. Belongs on thrash metal album.

MarkPMus I agree and I believe Rostropovich was the greatest Shostakovich interpreter!

What about György Ligeti? Anyway, there are many composers such as John Adams who didn't suffer and they write very talented pieces.

Have you heard Gorecki's 3rd Symphony? That's most def. not film score, written in 1976. Stunning.

Loved your Knowing Me, Knowing You video.

Rudolf, can I recommend (if yoou don't know it already) the LSO/ Mstislav Rostropovich version of Symphony No 5? Serial LSO0058. There's an SACD version and CD, but both were recorded in DSD which is the SACD standard. A lovely recording with HUGE dynamic range. Also an absolutely stunning interpretation.

hmm.. It has been a very long time since I have listened to his 5th Symphony. I will have to listen to it again. From memory, the performance I have is quite good (cant remember who did it - but I will tell you in a weeks time!)

I adore Shostakovich!

Me too! Personally, I think that Shostakovich was the last great classical composer, I can't think of anyone else at the present time who is writing classical music that is so great. Most composers nowadays write film music, but for Shostakovich his life was real, he lived through so much pain. That's why you only see sad, deep photos of him.
