Hawaiian's Makahiki was a time when all wars and battles were ceased, tributes and taxes paid by each district to the ruling chief, sporting competitions and contests between villages were organized, and festive events were commenced. Several of the rigid kapu (regulating religious and social laws) were eased or temporarily set aside to allow more freedom of activity and easy celebration. It was a time of rest and renewal in preparation for the next growing season.
On March 5 2010, the Wailuku First Friday celebrated the closing of the Makahiki event. The chanter is Kaponoai Molitau, a kumu hula, wise and well respected leader who also has a store on Market Street called the Native Intelligence.
Also celebrated was the 2nd Pa`i A`i Taro Pounding competition and other celebrations on the street included Kamehameha School "Unveiling" a One-Act comedy; Mobius Project band; Zumba excercise on the street; Maui Cattle Company Brisket Sliders; Gallerie Ha, Aloha Slam; Habitat for the Humanity at the KPOA 93.5 FM Wailuku Banyan Tree Park, sidewalk vendors with handmade crafts, arts and trinkets; ono (delicious) food and lots of fun!
