You've got guts there - those hemostats were very short. Also, you may want to try getting a snake hook, using it to remove them from their cage and set up a feeding bin (any large rubbermaid container will do).
I have read that if you feed a snake in their cage they will associate their cage with food, and may have a greater chance of striking you when you reach into the cage. If they associate the bin with food, it's not as likely for them to strike at you when you go into the cage.
