Animal rescue crews worked for three hours Wednesday to free a puppy trapped in a hole in Swope Park.
A man doing community service noticed the dog was stuck near Oldham and Blue River roads.
"Saw this little puppy sitting in here in this hole in the corner," Bret Westrope told KMBC. "I just love little dogs. I could see this dog was in need of some help."
Westrope called 911, which alerted animal control officers and firefighters.
He also called his mother, asking her to bring some gloves and shovels.
But they needed more than gloves and shovels.
Crews started digging by hand, then used shovels and eventually, a backhoe.
After several hours, the puppy was pulled out. He appears to be a lab mix that is about 5 months old.
One of the dog's rescuers is considering adopting the lucky pup.
"I've grown attached to that dog the last three hours," Pat Bradbury said.
The puppy was taken to Kansas City's animal shelter. Other than being a little frightened, the puppy is OK.
