We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continuum to present-day Tokyo, where he finds himself one with the city's homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword. My favorite Takashi Miike movie. This film is based on a real person, who really was crucified. In feudal Japan, crucifixion was used instead of seppuku or beheading on the most reviled criminals. In the case of a person of the samurai class, it would be the most shameful possible way to die. As a matter of fact, the symbol of the crucifix was something that was a great obstacle to the spread of christianity upon it's introduction to Japan.

  • やっぱり映画の中では一番好きかも…

    続編みたいなの出してもらいたいですけどこれはこれで一回で終わってしまうからいいんでしょうね…

  • Aw, you forgot the duel where they both die and then he gets back up again like 30 seconds later.

  • @gotgot4242 its supposed to be horror kind of and whats more horrific than a woman pulling a sword out of her pussy xD

  • @goukison81

The action scenes are amazing and surreal. But some of the content is questionable, a woman pulls a sword out of her vagina (what the hell is that?). However this film is worth viewing, it seems more like a visual sketchpad of ideas for director Takeshi Miike.

  • very cool

  • @butoden I understood it as an outlet for the incredible amounts of aggression and violence pent up in the japanese culture. What takashi miike did with this film was bring realism back to death and the katana, which despite the fantasy depictions of sword slashers is still understood to be "really fucking deadly".

  • Great movie!

    You'll love it or you'll hate it,no middle way,but it's a must-see for everyone.

It needs some knowledge about eastern religious concepts (or some research afterward) to fully understand its symbolism.
