PITTSDRIVER1970- you "dive" at the poles to swing the hook (it acts like a pendulum) so that it can pick the banner. If you did not, your have a better chance at "snagging" the gear.
I do this job in Holland, and I was surprised to see that the way this tricky exercise is executed is exactly the same in both The Netherlands as in the States. Only the way this pilot dives is a lot more spectaculair. It seems like he dives to approx. 2 feet above the ground, our planes pickup at about 6 or 7 feet. Compliments to the Pilot and also a great compliment for the ground-crew!!! Nice Job!!

I'm wondering why you're diving at the poles? That's a sure fire way to snag the rope with your main gear.
