Very simple levitation demonstration that used the power of static electricity to levitate some thin mylar plastic.

If you don't have mylar, cellophane or tissue paper work fine. Mylar is best... cellophane is impossible to see, but tissue paper works nearly good as mylar.

This effect is know as Van Der Graaf Levitation. There is a toy on the market that does this, but it's expensive and it uses batteries.

  • can i use alumin foil or i cant

  • @kerriechapa210

    Sorry, aluminum foil is too heavy. Try cellophane, also known as saran wrap. Very thin tissue paper also works, but only for 20 seconds or so.

  • This isn't "magnetic", this is static electric. Lern 2 Science.

  • @Duffytoler I am aware of the fact that this is not magnetic levitation.The title is meant to attract an audience; 'magnetic' is a keyword people think of when they think about levitation.The general public doesn't know or care about electron clouds and whatnot, they just want to make something float. Lern 2 Market.

  • @pyroneph Also it's "Van de Graaff", not "Van Der Graff". But if you prefer to pass on misinformation in the name of marketing, maybe you should just call it "Van Derp Graaff".

  • @Duffytoler

    The term has more than one accepted way of English spelling. However, I'll admit that the extra 'f' on 'Graaff' is a typo

  • Seriously? 3 entire minutes to cut a piece of paper?

  • Cant you do this like making the rings as a ring and put them on your finger and levitate the pole? I saw a video of this girl levitating a pole "Girl at a rave" Video and she has to shiney ringings on her thumbs and it looks like shes using them to move it.

  • @pyroneph awwww but i dont have no thin tissue  ;-;

  • As a teacher of Chemistry and Physics I have to compliment you on the clarity of this video. This was perfect, no extra junk or unneeded fluff, just a perfectly clear and simple video. THANKS!

  • @Duffytoler I Think You Understood What He Meant.
