A trailer from WHAM! BAM! ISLAM!, Isaac Solotaroff's documentary that will air on PBS's Independent Lens on October 13th (check your local listings). WHAM! BAM! ISLAM! (http://www.facebook.com/WhamBamIslam) tells the story of Naif Al-Mutawa and his venture to create the first team of superheroes from the Muslim world called THE 99. Following the tumultuous journey of THE 99 from concept to reality, from international acclaim to censure by cultural gatekeepers, Al-Mutaw doggedly pursues his vision to bring new heroes to Muslim children while re-introducing Islam to the West.

  • This is an AWESOME Idea! just plain AWESOME! The Saudi government is STUPID for banning it in the country. He is contributing more to Islam, the Prophet (pbuh) and Allah then The entire Saudi population put together (no offense to the cool saudis, lol).

  • mashallah. great idea brother :)

  • wAllah it is an excellent idea to have Islamic entertainment for children, and a comic would be brilliant, but this one seems to be treading on thin ice. I have not read it, but it seems that there are super heroes each called one of the 99 names of God, but then surely you are attributing a form to each of these names. As long as there is not a superhero called "al-Rahman" or "al-Jabbar" etc then it is ok, but if there is then it could even be shirk. Allahu 'alem.

  • Im a Muslim n i want to read the comic book!

  • As long as theres no depictions of the messenger pbuh then there shouldn't be any problems but there saying he's re writing the Quran? I don't know I never read his comic book so does anyone know when the next time this will be televised again???

  • i think he could have chosen a better means of portraying his message

  • Brilliant idea. Let's ask Anjem AKA 'Andy' AKA 'I-used-to-get-inebriated-every-single-night-but-now-I-preach-jihad-against-kuffar' Chowdhury for his opinion.

  • @mpooyan83 You're comment should have ended at "The Saudi government is STUPID." Not just for banning that, they've done countless acts of idiocy and hatred.

  • Just read the free Origins comic on their website (in English, thankfully, as my Arabic is about as good as my every other language that isn't English). They've got a pretty interesting little premise going here. It's not just a good tool of turning kids away from fanaticism and religious lunacy, but on top of that it also seems to be a pretty decent read.

  • @rupbe It's not "writing the Qu'ran", nor is it intended to replace the Qu'ran. It simply further re-enforces basic virtues and positive ideals found in the Qu'ran (moreso in the characters, not in the setting or story), albeit in a more colourful, modern, and 'fun' way that younger muslims and non-muslims can enjoy. And no, it doesn't contain depictions of the Prophet (pbuh).

You should really look into things more before you just blindly state that it's haram.
