Chase, a Rhodesian Ridgeback rescue, practices lateral movements and pivots. Thanks kikopup! Kikopup posted a great tutorial on how to teach these moves without using aversives.
These moves can also be taught using a prong collar. We learned them orginally from redtriborders, who learned them from J. DeMello. It had been 3 years since Chase had done any of these movements, he was no longer adept at them and, for some of the behaviors, had not achieved the level of proficiency shown here (which still has room for improvement). Kikopup was showing some great movements on her channel and I asked for her assistance. She has a wonderful tutorial video on training lateral movements and pivots. Check it out. I tried out her methods and was impressed! Having trained these behaviors with aversives (prong collar) and without, I prefer kikopup's method and find it equally, if not more, effective. I no longer use aversives in training and deeply regret my days training in the prong collar. They are certainly not necessary for trick training or training the behaviors shown here. I prefer positive reinforcement and shaping. Everyone has to decide for themselves what works best for them, their dog and their goals. No slight was intended to redtriborders. Chase relearned the behaviors using positive methods only. Thank you, again, kikopup, for demonstrating training without the use of aversives. :-)
Search rogersmmr for more of our ridgeback and trick videos.
Do you recall by any chance what the Kikopup video was called? I tried searching but she has so many wonderful videos it is sometimes helpful to know what it is called. I'm interested in teaching the lateral moves with cross-over paws and especially the move where the dog is in front of you perpendicular to you and when you move forward or back the dog maintains that perpendicular position. Thanks!!!! P.S. GREAT JOB!!!

@Wendy1Mollie Thank you. Kikopup's video is called "How to train a dog pivoting - for heel, rally, freestyle and more." Also, "Key to Complex Tricks - rear end awareness." Happy training!

Well done !
How do you keep the dog parallel while moving sideways ?

@AgilityFox Good question. I taught lateral movement with eye contact first. Kikopup has a wonderful tutorial video on pivots and lateral movement. I also reinforce eye contact when the dog is in the 12:00 position. The dog starts looking for/following your eyes. Hope this helps. Happy clicking. :-)
