April 13, 2008. United 870 (old livery), 747-400, Sydney to San Francisco (12.5+ hours). Takeoff delayed by an hour due to thunder storm and airport closure. Takeoff on Rwy 16R (34L) 13,018 ft, full length requested. Takeoff heading SSE over Botany Bay before turning left and to the NE just over the coast for the flight to San Francisco.

  • AIRPORT CLOSURE?? WTF???

  • Most large airports have a similar policy and is implemented to protect the ground workers from lightning strikes, plus the lower visibility and strong multi-directional winds cause problems for aircraft in the air and especially when close to the ground. Same thing as aircraft flying around thunder heads and not through them - but the airport can't move - so you have to wait for the thunder storm to pass.
