My review of Hayao Miyazaki's latest anime masterpiece just recently released in theaters, "Ponyo" starring the likes of Tina Fey, Noah Lindsey Cyrus, Frankie Jonas, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett.

  • I never really liked ponyo since to me the villains was like:

I will fill this well with these potions and flood the world, mwahahahaha

Ponyo then breaks the door, the water floods the well and the world starts ending (if he only needed sea water to fill the well dhy didn't he just open the door in the first place?)

Then the villain changes to "no this flooding is bad we must stop it"

I never figured out why the villain suddenly changed his tone completely and I was lost from that moment

  • @edl01reviews Its not a "Ponyo thing" with the villains its more of a "Miyazaki thing". Miyazaki has stated he feels the whole good vs. evil story plot to be too cliche and simplistic. He never writes truly evil villains or villains at all for that matter because he doesn't believe every story NEEDS a villain to fight. In fact, I believe with the exception of Colonel Muska in "Castle in the sky", there is not a "true villain" in every single one of Miyazaki's movies.

  • @BionicSlime yes but it is entirely contradictory to just change roles like that

Also maybe it is just me but I noticed main villains in films like princess mononoke and tales from earthsea (granted that was his son)

it is your entirely your opinion of course and I won't insult it

  • @edl01reviews Well let's be straight here, he was never even that bad to begin with, besides things kinda changed when his daughter became involved. I didn't see Earthsea but I did Mononoke and in truth, all the "bad guys" became good at the end anyway. None of the villains in Mononoke were out for anything evil purpose wise, they simply did what they believed was right and each "villain" changed after the end anyway, learned the error of their ways. Most real villains don't do that.

  • This movie was great until the ending. The ending was bullshit. They are getting to the climax and sousuke has to prove his true love for Ponyo, and what is the grand love trial he has to persevere through ?

"hey sousuke, do you really love ponyo?"

    "yes"

"okay I believe you. she can be a human forever now"

    The End

    I was like wtf?

I also agree that he kind of lost his touch with Howls Moving castle, which is my least favorite miyazaki film, and this one gave me hope again for the future.

  • @WarchiefBlackhand I really didn't have a problem with the ending. I think it was a bold and nice touch to try and play up a romance for children characters, I believe the "trial" was the walking through the tunnel scene and above all else: making sure he realizes the ramifications of what he's asking for Ponyo's sake. I found it touching in the sense that it shows a child can show true love and realizing how important Ponyo is as a person and not just a pet....but that;s me.
