Environment change threatens food security
Some 400, 000 Kenyans who grow 60 percent of the tea in the country risk losing their livelihood if a temperature rise of only two degrees Celsius occurs due to global warming as large areas would become unsuitable for the crop. The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) says the agricultural sector is losing up to Shs 200 billion revenue because of soil erosion Large scale uncontrolled human activities like charcoal production, logging, settlement and crop cultivation pose a huge threat. Natural grass for wildebeest has significantly reduced due to expansion of large mechanized wheat farms in the Maasai Mara. The country is likely to be warmer in future up to five degrees Celsius unless urgent interventions were done. While some areas will experience increased drought, others are likely to have more rainfall spelling doom for low lying areas.
