This will only work against someone with not much experience. To improve this the leg should be on the side of your head closer to the ground.

Don't use your groin as the fulcrum point, meaning don't try to break the knee on your balls. Instead, squeeze your knees/legs together above his knee (the higher the better), trapping his leg between your legs, just out of distance of your groin, and thrust your hips forward and arch your back backward. I never wear a cup and i don't have any problems as long as i remember to squeeze my knees together. This also applies to armbars and will help keep both submissions tighter.
