We visited the Gloucester Warwicks for the second week running to check out newly restored GWR Heavy Freight loco 2807. Unfortunately a failure in the valve mechanism on the second trip of the day, as the loco emerged from Greet tunnel, which resulted in the loss of a key part meant an undignified end to the day for the loco. Prompt action by the crew, who brought the loco to a swift halt, prevented serious damage to the mechanism. We recorded the locomotive's departure from Winchcombe immediately prior to the failure, and came across the aftermath some three quarters of an hour later.
Duties were shared with 9F 92203 Black Prince, which operated on a reduced service for the afternoon runs.
2807 at Hailes and Winchcombe; failed at Greet Meadows; at Winchcombe Station awaiting movement to Toddington; post mortem at Toddington sheds. 92203 Black Prince at Didbrook, Hailes, Winchcombe and Gretton Meadows.

  • they should reopen Hailes Abbey Halt

  • @LeamingtonSteve

I think they have enough on their hands at thew moment with landslips, Broadway extensions etc. Besides the road across Hailes Bridge is becoming so busy that they would probably have to install traffic lights or a one-way system to cope with the extra traffic!

  • I was travelling on the 1st coach behind 2807 on that memorable day on 7 August. After waiting for 29 years to see this loco in steam (I'm a member of the owning group) I was excited to say the least! The engine had run over 500 miles at Llangollen prior to returning to her "home" base but she wasn't going to settle in without a fuss! Suffice to say all was fixed by the following Sunday when, amongst other things, 2807 had to rescue a failed diesel! 2807 is the oldest GWR loco privately owned.

Many thanks for making contact. I hope you managed the first trip which was a successful one! It is a lovely looking loco - I have a soft spot for GWR heavy freight locos - and no doubt she will give years of excellent service. Excellent job by the team in fixing her so quickly; the general prognosis at the time was 4-5 weeks.

  • why douse that 8F look strange with the strainge number plate ':l

  • @ShaurntheSheep

The loco is in Turkish livery, with a Turkish number plate. It last ran in that country.

Thanks Mark. Unfortunately I missed the actual incident as we had just filmed it on the other side of the tunnel, rushed to film Black prince at Hailes and had a pint at the pub before we chanced upon the scene. We had to rely on the reports of a friend of ours who witnessed the event at the tunnel mouth and then went off for a drink.

  • @hurleyfunbags

Thanks. There was no panic, everyone just got on with sorting the problem out in their own good time.
