Bach's Chaconne transcribed and played by Busoni on a rare fully restored 1926 Steinway Pedal Electric Duo-Art Player Piano.

For Students of Ferruccio Busoni's interpretation of his own transcription of Bach's Chaconne, this Duo-Art recording is a unique opportunity for study.

This Duo-Art roll of Busoni playing the Chaconne is a duplicate of an original using digital techniques. We are fortunate that modern methods have enabled exact copies of old and rare rolls to be made.

I personally find Busoni's playing a little bland compared to some modern versions which may be down to the roll production techniques of the time. However, it is still a masterpiece considering that the original technology here is approaching one hundred years old and compares favourably with other versions of Busoni's transcription of Bach's Chaconne on YouTube.

Due to YouTube's restrictions on length, I have had to divide this video into two parts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKMXzxi1Xzg
However, the sound quality is a useful improvement on some of my earlier YouTube efforts.

  • Hey thanks sooo much for recording this! Did you buy a re-cut of the roll?

  • Thanks for your comment, yes this is a re-cut roll that was cut from a digital master of an original roll which should make the re-cut an exact copy. I would still like an original roll if anyone has one going, but they are quite rare.

  • I love this piece. I also collect Duo-Art rolls. I have a Weber grand. Your piano is one the best. Thank you for posting.

  • listening to this using my new headphones instead of my notebook speakers really shows this instruments value.... what a rich sound, I love it. Please post some more.

  • Crikey, Busoni had some octaves.

    Thankyou very much for this!
