Ford idi all the way, love everything about them. Dodges are sweet, but Ford wins my vote

The international IDIs and the cummins were the best damn motors in that time period.

Im a fan of both but ford but I wish urs was a 97

Got to say stroker... Not any thing against the dodge
But I never have really delt with one

@faded2blak One of the primary benefits of cooler intake air is the direct relationship to EGT's. Let's say you have 250°F air exiting the turbocharger, you then cool it to 150°F with a CAC. You've then lowered your EGT's by nearly the same amount. Instead of 1100°F you're now down to 1000°F, allowing you to give the engine more fuel and not risk melting your pistons while climbing a grade.
-
@faded2blak I agree that cold air intakes aren't all they're cracked up to be. While the amount of fuel injected on many older diesels is not dependent on the amount of air inhaled, the power and efficiency of the engine is. A diesel fuel system can continue to inject fuel, but if there is not adequate oxygen present for full combustion of all that fuel, all you get is black smoke (wasted fuel, no more power). Once the engine is running, cooler air is better (within reason).

@nate0031 the amount of fuel put into the cylinders has nothing to do with the IAT the throttle on diesels are hooked directly to a fuel pump. im not saying that you want HOT air but cold air doesnt really help anything. the hotter the incoming air the better the combustion will be. no you do not want combustion so hot the engine cannot cool itself and break down but generally speaking for a better burn you want warmer air. im just saying that cold air isnt all its cracked up to be.
-
@faded2blak Also, especially on a diesel, you do not want hot air in your intake as this raises the engines EGT's as well, limiting total power production and hindering engine reliability and longevity. The only time you would want warm air is during a cold start situation, hence the grid heaters used on some engines.
-
@faded2blak That is not true. Why would they put charge air coolers on almost all forced induction vehicles if you want hot air? According to physics, PV=nRT, a defined amount of gas (moles) at a defined temperature and pressure has a defined volume. At a lesser temperature, the volume is less as well (V is directly proportional to T). This means you can pack more air molecules into the combustion chamber, and ergo more fuel as well. This gives you more power.

I have a 90 idi turbo my father has a 95 psd my buddy has a cummins the dodge and the psd sound better than my idi but mine pulls stronger I know it doesn't make sense but I have 4:10 gears they both have 4:56 gears we all pull the same trailers with the same loaders and I can pull away from them but they do sound good!!!
nice hot air intake lol
