Virtuoso of the sarod, Pt. Rajeev Taranath, senior disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan played this rarely heard variant from the Sarang family of ragas last weekend at the Spic Macay concert in Los Angeles. This excerpt is the intro, a bit of the alaap & the complete jor Rajeevji played.

  • great, wonderful, amazing, awesome. I'd really like to have his disc in my collection.

  • paagaldas - the intonation of this piece is very correct. I think that you do not realise that Lanka Dahan Sarang uses unusual shruthis of several swaras, such as several different komal Ni's and different Komal Ga's. There are at least 4 different values for Ni in this rag, 2 of them in between Ni Shuddha and Ni Komal, and 2 different Komal Ga's. You will hear the same values in Ali Akbar's recording of the rag.

  • great to hear this!

  • This is incase u read this Rajeev Uncle.. Amazing piece as usual:)

  • really wonderful. thanks for posting.

  • how interesting it is to hear this raag. a poiganacy to it. and what playing - great!

  • the development appears that way besause of the editing. It is a series of short excerpts of a performance sewn together but the editing is choppy. It appears to have been edited like that essentially to show the phrases in the raga and not to reflect a real whole performance. The editing might account for the intonation you mentioned although I think it wonderful.

  • fairly accurate mix of desi and sarang, but i find his development quite erratic. intonation is also inconsistent, if you listen closely. nice tone and nail-to-string contact.

  • Great playing! Thank you for the post. I am very glad to hear this dignified and very moving presentation by this master.
