We can observe a phenomenon and believe to have an in-depth understanding of it, only to be shown later that there is a deeper level of activity that we couldn't even imagine at work in the very same phenomenon. Just because someone wrote about observing something in the past doesn't mean they had any understanding of the inner workings or physical mechanics involved in its operation.
