Demonstrate using 1000 and 6000 grit waterstones to sharpen a plane blade. Show how to use a Veritas Mk II honing jig. And also describe the David Charlesworth "ruler trick" for polishing just the edge of the back of the blade.

  • Nice video. I use the same Veritas water stone pro sharpening set with the mk2 guide myself. It makes it an easy job.

I have never tried the steel rule trick though.

  • Thanks.

  • Let me get this right... You flatten the back of the blade, and then you tilt it up with the thickness of a rule, and flatten it again? That's going to give an edge like a cold-chisel, so how would the frog seat well on that? This sounded a bit suspect to me. I tried it and I ditched it.

  • It does introduce a slight back bevel. You only need to flatten it again if you don't get on with this method. But it cuts down the time for polishing the back significantly. Still not for everyone - just demonstrating a well discussed and used method of sharpening.

  • Thank you for posting such an accurate and informative video on how to sharpen a chisel your thorough expertise in this area is much appreciated by the youtube audience .

  • No problem - glad you liked it!

  • great info!

  • Let me just say you do NOT need the microbevels, you can just hone the entire bevel and while it takes more time, the larger edge is worth it.

  • i love to sharp my chisels manual.i use oil stone

  • video doesn't load...

  • @dynamicz108

    ROFLMAO

Or perhaps they hired a bunch of Mexicans to chisel away the building in the basement, and than flew a plane into it to cover it up

  • Well explained video friend, although I don't use a guide. Takes too much time, which should be spent working. In the trade, the work-shy often used sharpening as a means of 'having a beak' from some onerous task or another I should add. Maybe they still do! :)

Good guide for the newbies Happy Christmas

  • So thats what Bush did! he put planing blades on the front of the aircraft he ordered to fly into the building

  • Would it cut the world trade center in half?

  • would that blade cut a sheet of paper freshly ?

  • Nice video sir.

I have been trying to sharpen my blade, but

have not been able to get it really sharp.

I just put the blade in a chisel and set the angle at 25 degrees and sharpen it. I then

    sharpen the back.

You sir, sharpen the blade at 25 degrees

and after this at 30 degrees to get a second

level and after this 32 degrees or so to get

    a 3 microlevel.

Is this correct, sir? I will try your method.
