Here are a few answers to some of the main questions asked: Charters on Maui are either done on share boats or on privates. Most, but not all, boats will just take 6 passengers. You can sign on a share boat and then be on with other passengers who sign up as well. Most boats require a minimum of 4 passengers to make the trip a go so if you are one of the first passengers to sign up you may not be confirmed. Generally speaking if your have 4 or more passengers in your party you should consider taking the boat as a private because the pricing will be the same or better and youll have the whole boat just for your family and friends. Fishing charters usually come in half, three-quarter or full days which are approximately 4,6 or 8 hour trips. As a general rule, the longer you fish the larger you latitude of fishing locations becomes and your likelihood of catching fish increases. There is no guarantee youll catch fish. The captain and crew will do the best job they can but remember the old adage about why they call it fishing and not catching. When you do catch fish many people want to know if theyll be able to keep the catch. The way it generally works on Maui is that the fish caught are kept by the boat since most visitors would not have anyplace to keep the fish if they took it with them anyway. The crew will almost certainly however carve off enough filets for you to take back to the condo to have a fish fry for your family and friends that evening. Fish that are most commonly fished for and caught here on Maui are the Skip-jack and yellowfin tuna, Marlin, Ono, and Mahi-mahi. In addition to the trolling which is the most popular form of sport fishing here on the island, we also have boats that go out bottom fishing. On these boats each fisherman is given a pole. The boat stops over a likely fishing spot, and the fisherman drop the bait down near the bottom ..and hopes for the best. As a general rule, you will almost always catch some type of fish when bottom fishing but they are usually much smaller fish than can be caught when sport fishing.
