i have never been very lucky with planting or cutivating moss. i have only hade one succesful one but it was my first bonsai and it died. what always happens is that either the moss gets too much light or dirt or little speek of sphagnum moss gets on it and kills it, somtime it just dosnt get good contact and wont go down. if you have any advice i would be happy to hear it.

I am uncertain of what type of moss you are referring to. Using the sphagnum moss method, I have little problem using a top layer of bryophytic moss in direct contact with the shagnum moss. Please clarify what you are doing. Thanks! Jerry
