I don't see any indication of Mickey Rooney's character being dumb or filthy in this movie. The Japanese people are known for being both clean & smart (for the most part, of course). And of course the actor here is not of the Asian persuasion. Actually, his real name wasn't even Mickey Rooney. It was Joe Yule, Jr. I suppose some think it was a racist portrayal because of the oversized buck teeth. Yes, that once was a stereotype. But personally I've never known any Asians who had buck teeth.

i didn't see any sign of racism here on this movie when i watch this film actually so why some people they said this is a sample of racism film even the director said when they visit Japan " Japanese likes it and it's so funny" so what's wrong it's just a film !

That's not true - in the 60s, Bruce Lee and George Takei were starting out. Jack Soo (from Barney Miller) was doing standup. I think Tommy Chong was starting out. Pat Morita was also working. Anna Mae Wong goes back. There have always been some Asian actors in Hollywood, but not that many overall. Also, in Los Angeles, it's always been very Asian maybe around 10% in the 60s, and some work behind the scenes, so there's some awareness of the real culture.

I definitely know that now rather than one year ago when I originally posted that comment.

I just recently watched the Fuller film noir 'The Crimson Kimono'. Hard to believe that such a progressive film featuring an Asian American was made two years before Breakfast at Tiffany's!

@wildgift2 ya but before then people of all races have been severely stereotyped: blacks were portrayed as big lipped buck toothed criminals that have little to know brains, Asians were portrayed as nearsighted people with bad grammar working in railroads. come to think of it before the 60s every race on earth was stereotyped and insulted by hollywood.

Rooney's fun in the old musicals, but he's not much of an actor. He's portraying a Japanese person, and it's not accurate at all. The accent's wrong. The character is just a racial buffoon. There's no heart in it. This role is like when Americans eat shitty sushi - you all think it's great stuff - but it's really shitty and you can't tell.

This isn't funny. It's not even a good fake.

So what justifies Hollywood casting white people as Asian people in films being made and released today, now, in 2009/2010?
