I suppose 25 minutes is about all it takes to change even an adult's mind about everything. That is, if the adult has no real idea why he or she believes something aside from "that's how my parents and my friends feel, so I do too."
Despite Clavell's Soviet overtones here, there are sophists in every branch of the political tree. If you don't know WHY you pledge allegiance (formally or in your heart), you're easy pickings for any of them.

I love who they cast as the 'soviet' teacher. she is the daughter of the author of this book, who inspired him to write it when she couldn't tell him what the pledge of allegiance really meant, even if she had it imprinted in her head by her school teacher....

I had to read this play in drama last week

Very intriguing this is. Getting people to join of their own accord is the best way to get support. I don't condone the tricks used however or the subtle vocabulary. Molotov used that extensively under Stalin, it's trickery pure and simple. I suppose my moral compass is too strong as I hate stuff like that, it works but doesn't mean I like it. Interesting little video (all parts combined that is). Teacher was a fox as well, just had to put that out there.

Why are they scared? Did the Vietnam war just happen? Oh yeah and did this new teacher come from nationalist school?

Why are they scared?

Where do you think the old teacher went in the CHildren's Story? Do you think she was sent to a forced labour camp or put to death?

Wow! Sesame Street was really different in the 80's.
-
I was rooting for the new teacher.
-
Oh no our that teacher is indoctrinating children with different lies than teachers usually indoctrinate our children with.

@steveasat2 people should check into Why children were made to make the pledge to begin with.

THANK YOU. I was just about to say the same exact thing before I perused over all the comments.
We read this book in English class... it's pretty good. It's too bad Miss Worden had to leave right in the beginning - she seemed so nice. I REALLY didn't like the New Teacher when I read the story.
