Earl , K5ROC shows his portable station using a Alinco DX-70 for HF and Yaesu FT-7800R for VHF/UHF. The radios along with antenna tuner and power supply are mounted in a computer case it is transported by placing in a case with wheels and handle. Antennas for the station are a 1/4 wave Diamond and a Little Tarheel II screwdriver.
You were listening to the 14.336 County Hunter's Net on the HF radio. I used to run mobile there all the time and look forward to getting back to it soon. 73 de Korey-W3TUA

Wow, I was thinking of starting my amateur radio license soon, and I have so many junked PCs lurking around which I can gut for reuse as radio cases... I like the inspiration from this video, thanks!

What kind of computer case is that?

Nice rig Earl! I can't believe I stumbled across this. Hope to see you at Field Day. 73 de N5JLC

20mm ammunition cans make nice portable cases similar to his server case. Nice rig.

Yes......kind of. The HF waves will be refracted by the ionosphere and return to earth. So, theoretically, there is a "blind spot". But there is thing called scatter, which is where the radio waves are "scattered" by the ionosphere and the earth, where you can receive the signal, but it isn't as good as if you were where the wave was hitting the earth from the ionosphere.

I'm still very new to this... Can you do HVIS with a Screwdriver? I still don't quite understand HF... I know that HF doesn't depend on Line of Sight, but bounces... So does that mean there's a potential blind area 20 to 100 miles out, that's too far for LOS, but too close to bounce? THerefore needing to go vertical with the HF antenna (HVIS)?

I see hams that use screwdrivers while driving - works OK. Get it at high on auto as possable. I do not have a mount for driving.

I want to go portable with my rig-- if I want to transmit while driving in the HF ranges, can a screwdriver work or do I need a different type of antenna?
